BY LAKSHMAN RANASINGHE

Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, had a smooth sail to glory with a 70-39 victory over Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy, to win the Sri Lanka Schools Under-20 basketball championship in the finals played at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium recently.

HFC looked prepared from the start of the tournament in April with a strong line-up of players as well as a dynamic coaching duo piloting all through.

With an unbeaten run and high scoring gaps against their opponents, the Familians faced an unpredictable Mahamaya side in the final game of the tournament. though it appeared to be a fair matchup in the first quarter, Holy Family retaliated quickly, getting into their dominant offensive structures to end the game and emerge champs with a massive 31-point lead.

Onela Dunuwille and Minoli Direkze steered the game for the Familians, with both girls also being adjudged as the Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player, respectively. Chithera Samarakoon of Mahamaya was adjudged the Best Offensive Player.

After a drought in the sport of nearly two years, Gaja Group sponsored the Under-20 tournament, which shone a light on school basketball and also brought back the best talents of school players.
