Former Trinity Lion Abeyratne no more

Former Trinity College Rugby Lion, CR and FC, national player and Sri Lanka Rugby Manager, Ajith Abeyratne passed away after a brief illness in Colombo.

The late Abeyratne started his career as a second row forward and made his debut for Trinity First XV outfit in 1965 under the leadership of M. T. M. Zarook.

He played for Trinity till 1968 and led the outfit in his last two years winning the Bradby in 1967.

The late Abeyratne also went on to win his Rugby Lion while playing as number eight during in his last two years at Trinity.

As a coach late Abeyratne took the Sri Lanka Team to the World Rugby Sevens in Sydney, Australia in 1987. In rugby administration, he was the head of selectors and national coach from 1985 to 1988 and a consultant at CR and FC for nearly 20 years.

He is the holder of coaching certificates from Wales (1986), New Zealand (Level-1), Australia (1987), England (1991) and the International Rugby Board Level-3 (1997).

The late Abeyratne was on the Sri Lanka National Coaching Panel plus the disciplinary committee in 2004. In addition, he was a fine rugby commentator.
