J.R. takes oath as Executive President at Galle Face

1978 - J. R. Jayewardene assumed office as first elected Executive President of Sri Lanka in 1978 before one million people on the wide Galle Face Green. The ceremony marked a major constitutional change effected by the second amendment to the republican constitution of Sri Lanka. This was under the 3rd amendment to the Constitution which empowered the President to hold a Presidential Election anytime after the expiration of four years of his first term. This was a great concentration of power in a single office to administer the nation’s affairs as the elected executive.
