As Sri Lanka celebrates its 75th year of independence from British rule today, while grappling with the worst economic crisis faced in history, President Ranil Wickremesinghe expresses confidence in the country rising up from the current turmoil and coming back stronger.

Releasing his message a day ahead of the celebrations that will cost the forex-deprived nation a thumping Rs.196 million, the

president shared that efforts are underway for renewed economic development.

“There is a new economic and social reform agenda before the country with the objectives focusing first on recovery and then on renewed development. It is imperative for us to unite in its implementation, so that we can emerge with a high level of economic prosperity,” said Wickremesinghe in his official Independence Day message to the nation.

He went on the pledge that “extremely” difficult, yet vital decisions would be made to achieve the goal, which would be realised with “courage and determination”.

“I anticipate the confidence and support of you, the people of our country, in this endeavour,” Wickremesinghe added.

Gratitude was extended to the Sri Lankan expatriate community for their contribution towards the development of the country, despite being away.

As poor policies have led to a severe shortage of foreign currency in the country, which brought economic activities to a stagnant state in mid-2022, the government is heavily reliant on worker remittances to somewhat rectify the challenges faced.

However, the remittances have been low when compared with the previous years, largely due to the loss of faith and trust in the government in utilising the forex appropriately. Further, with the country witnessing a massive flight of talent, especially the youth, Wickremesinghe urged the expat community to assist in securing a bright future for the younger generation, who he described as the “vanguard of economic and social development”.

“Your faith and investment in the unique and creative ideas of our talented youth, who lack capital, could give considerable hope and be of immense benefit to our country in this crisis. On this historic anniversary, let us all resolve to meet the challenges of this year with further patience and fortitude,” he said.
