LETTER TO THE EDITOR Thoughts on Freedom Day

By: Jeannette Cabraal Waragoda Road Kelaniya.

Not a gun was heard, no blood was shed No bodies strewn, no gory heads When way back seventy five years ago We freedom gained,

No great divide, no enmity or strife United though diversity was rife Through a struggle unstained, unmarked We freedom gained.

We thought of life as sacrosanct We thought of all as one.

Let’s bow our heads in shame my countrymen

For what we revered is gone.

We’ve dimmed the glories of the past We’ve flown the flag at half-mast We’ve heard the “Last Post” bugle blast For those who their dear lives cast In a nation’s task.

What price freedom?

Unfurl the flag but gently then

And beat a muffled drum

A bowed head, a pause, a care

For those who on the war front there Sacrificed themselves with no qualms or fear

As we celebrate freedom this seventyfifth year.

‘tis not too late my countrymen to draw the broken threads

And hoist the flag aloft intact, warp and weft

And maintain in its true sense the freedom we’ve gained

And reiterate as we celebrate’ Propagate peace and banish hate.
