TRINITY CLINCH TITLE AFTER A DECADE

Trinity College Kandy clinched the Under 19 Tier ‘A’ Division One limited over tournament title when they recorded a comfortable 41 runs on D/L method win over Richmond College in the final played at the Thurstan ground yesterday. The match was hampered by rain when Trinity chasing 124 runs for victory, was on 109 for 4 having faced 24 overs.

However with rain not, ceasing the umpires were forced to call off the match which gave the Lions a comfortable victory and in the process they bagged the title for the first time in 10 years.

The match was curtailed to 41 overs and Trinity skipper Rahal Amarasinghe winning the toss and inviting Richmond to take first lease of the wicket turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

They had Richmond in tatters and struggling on 40 for 3 in the 17th over. Richmond lost two more quick wickets and slid to 52 for 5 in the 22nd over. Janeth Kaushal and Sharon Abhishek rescued the side with the pair adding 34 runs for the eighth wicket before being bowled out for a low score of 123 runs.

Trinity in their run chase was making steady progress spearheaded by skipper Amarasinghe who made a top score off 36 runs and supported by Theeraka Ranatunga, the duo made it easy for the Lions to clinch the limited over title with ease.

RESULT:

Richmond 123 in 40.1 overs (Sharon Abhishek 33, Janeth Kaushal 28, Tharinda Nirmal 19; Theeraka Ranatunga 3 for 24, Jayavi Liyanagama 2 for 10)

Trinity 109 for 4 in 24 overs (Rahal Amarasinghe 36, Theeraka Ranatunga 21 not out; Malsha Tharupathi 3 for 28)
