Cabinet green-lights talks to secure US$ 57mn USAID grant

The Cabinet green-light has been received to secure US$ 57 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to roll out a fresh programme to enable the country to overcome the on-going crisis focusing on productivity-based democratic governance and development of resilient supply chains. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stability and National Policies sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday to conduct discussions to obtain the proposed US$ 57 million grant from USAID to implement the project named ‘The Programme for a Democratic, Prosperous Sri Lanka with the Ability to Survive Amidst Disasters’.

The proposed project would preliminarily focus on the fields of productive democratic governance, growth based on a secure market and developing the resources required to sustain amid pressure and stress, according to the Department of Government Information.

Further, the project aims to sustain the progress achieved through earlier two projects rolled out in 2001— a programme to strengthen the cooperation for democratic good governance and social integrity, and a programme to create a sustainable and covered economic development.
