PARDON RANJAN!

There is a call from political parties, civil organizations and journalists requesting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to pardon former Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayaka. Some have requested Ranjan to appeal the President to pardon him. But should he? Was it not adequate, when Ranjan had apologised to the aggrieved party, the judiciary, in open court and yet the judiciary imposed the punishment? In my innocence, I question, what does ‘Pardon’ mean? It is the aggrieved party consenting to forgive the accused. If that is so, has not Ranjan done it as stated earlier, the aggrieved party being the judiciary?

What he should do is appeal to President to overrule the verdict by the judge, and not

‘Pardon’, if such powers are vested with the President under the Constitution.
