Brace yourselves for more hiccups!

December indeed started with a bang! Not only has the CEB commenced its habit of unannounced power cuts but the distribution of domestic gas cylinders has been halted until further notice. If this government is good at one thing, that is inconveniencing the public to an ultimatum. It was disgusting to hear one official from a LPG service provider making a statement to the effect that they changed the composition of gas cylinders for a trial. Earlier we had the incumbent government had abruptly halted the use of chemical fertilisers overnight. And that too was a trial! The last thing a government can do to its people is convert them including their own voters to lab rats in order to entertain their petty agendas.

As a country - a developing country to be precise, that is coming out of a pandemic it has to prioritise on the wellbeing of its citizenry first. Good speeches and promises won’t work anymore ; certainly not at this point. However, every government that come into power has continued to rip people off their pockets and further burden them with taxes. A power outage is not the best way to start the month but this could perhaps be the first of many to come. Already people have started rushing to fuel stations to pump fuel, fearing an impending shortage. But the Minister of Energy recently blamed the public for creating a man-made shortage in the earlier instance.

To top it all off the Omicron variant has now been detected in Sri Lanka. Every time the government faces a crisis, they announce a new wave, or they increase the number of COVID cases. Those who were anticipating a profitable festive season may perhaps have to be vigilant about the upcoming wave. A Rajapaksa frontliner recently said in Parliament that the government will not allow the new variant to enter the country. But looks like the variant has sneaked in under their noses.

The government at this point should consider looking after the citizenry rather than inconveniencing them further. But the citizenry should certainly anticipate more surprises in future while preparing to make more sacrifices! A DISGUSTED CITIZEN
