Battle against climate change
The energy crisis across Europe has resumed and some of the coal plants that remained closed for some years to counter the ever-increasing global temperatures. We are running out of time before we reach the climate change targets.
As Sri Lanka is grappling with its worst ever socio-economic and political crisis since its independence in 1948, the consumption of fuel has gone down as the country finds it difficult to import fuel regularly as it did before due to the lack of foreign exchange.
In terms of thinking as a solution to climate change, cutting off the fossil fuel is a commendable move but given the country’s situation, we have no room to think of curbing fossil fuel consumption as fuel has become essential to keep the economy active and alive. First, we need to reach a level of normalcy before we could think of getting actively involved in the battle against climate change. A CONCERNED CITIZEN
