LKR 5 million bonus to SL football team for a win or draw against the Maldives

BY SUSIL PREMALAL

The Football Sri Lanka (FSL) has decided to award an LKR five million bonus to the Sri Lanka football team if they win or draw against the Maldives in the AFC Asia Cup Qualifiers Final Round (2023) tournament.

Sri Lanka have been drawn in Group C with Thailand, the Maldives, and hosts Uzbekistan in the tournament to be held from June 8–14.

Sri Lanka will play Uzbekistan on June 8, Thailand on June 11, and the Maldives on June 14.

According to the FIFA world rankings, Uzbekistan is ranked 83, Thailand 111, the Maldives 156, and Sri Lanka 205.

Because the Maldives is one of the strongest teams in the group and South Asia, a win or draw against them will earn each member of the Sri Lanka team

LKR two lakhs, according to FSL president Jaswar Umar.

FSL has launched a system change by recruiting three foreign coaches, a first in Sri Lanka’s football history. The first phase of the system change, which is planned for three years until 2025, will begin on July 1.

FSL hopes to select the national football pool either today or tomorrow before going to a training camp in Qatar for which 31 players and 16 officials will be going.

The final 23-member squad for the AFC tournament in Uzbekistan will be chosen in Qatar on May 30, while the remaining players will return to Sri Lanka.

Sujan Perera has been retained as captain of the Sri Lanka team.
