Dignity of Police

I read about an article that read as “Treat the men of Khaki uniform with Dignity”. I believe most of them deserve it, but it is my fervent view that “dignity must be commanded and not demanded”. That can be achieved only with one’s conduct, combined with empathy, impartiality, honesty, integrity, compassion, tact and humility.

The policeman of today must learn to have the courage to stand up to what is right according to his conscience without merely trying to satisfy the ego of his superiors or Political heads, by pleasing them at every turn, with ulterior motives.

Today’s uprising by the people is an economic uprising which effects the whole population which should be understood by the police, without acting in haste and irresponsibly as laws in this country were not enacted to handle, situations of a different nature including terrorism, industrial riots, and unlawful assemblies of different types, perhaps our governments never envisaged economic, or food riots. Therefore the

Police officers of today must approach such peaceful demonstrations with caution, tact, empathy and decorum. The IGP and the senior Police officers must realize by now they should have identified officers of the police who are, capable of handling such situations, as it is not the forte of every police officer.

Even now the Police must to be tactful speak to the leaders and develop a rapport, give them the assurance of protection, and provide them the facility of moving without obstructing traffic and the movement of the general public rather than resorting to treat them like terrorists, or armed demonstrators. Police must learn to act with restraint giving the assurance that no harm will befall them with a peaceful protest.

The Police Department lacks proper leadership. It is quite evident the way

IGP has acted along with some seniors.

It is now I learn that allegedly the IGP has complained about interference in his administration by Senior Politicians, even in transfers and promotions. If so what was he doing without standing up to them when the necessity arose?

I firmly believe in that saying “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.”
